Live Review - Savages - Bo Ningen at:Junction Cambridge (19/2/16)

Admittedly the Savages are one of the most important representatives of Post Punk - Art Punk scene over the past years. With their proven valuable work on I am here (LP), Silent Your Self, Adore Life from the very beginning in 2012 when they were first formed. They chose to visit the Junction in Cambridge as part of their tour promoting their new album (Adore Life) creating a fascinating enthusiasm of the crowed and mine as they are one of my favorite groups .

Bo Nigen

The Japanese band Bo Nigen the support group that the Savages chose to open the concert around 20.00 were truly a breath taking surprise, I had in the past look in to them and what I liked was the fact that their reputation of the band was very vibrant in their live performance.

The intense stage show of the lead singer Taigen
Kawabe together with the other members, did not give any one the time to process their act from the very first moment they stepped, broadcasting an electrical and very unique sound delivering a authenticity to their name.

The vibrant presence in terms of music despite the Japanese lyrics were at least intoxicating, the pleasant combination of Acid  and Noise Rock with a Vintage sprinkle admittedly impressed me and the truth is I did not expect it.

The strength in energy they maintend through their performance and their impressive style of music along with their choice of what they were wearing left me and the crowd around me speechless  as this was a performance no one had clearly seen before or are used to seeing.

The only sure thing is that although the brief musical journey lasting almost an hour Bo Ningen offered generously, will not be the last and I hope to very soon see more of them as the impression they left me with was outstanding.

Savages

After booking the tickets for the Savages in advance months ago as you all know how quick concerts like these become sold out quickly ,so you can imagine my impassions from the time I walked in to the Junction however the big moment had almost arrived and for the first time and would see them live.

With their new  album "Adore Life" monopolizing my interest the last months from the time it was released, I was thrilled to see what would follow.

Around 21.15 Jehnny Beth makes her appearance followed by the rest of the woman of the band. "Surrender" from their latest album triggers the public which already exists in a delirium of excitement. After the necessary welcoming comments from the adorable French Jehnny in line comes "Hit me" and "Husbands" as a result bring everyone to a great ……….

This dark Post Punk -Noise Rock presented from these highly gifted ladies from their first LP with closed eyes leads you to a mysterious ecstasy that you cannot return from, like mythical sirens of a modern age.

Following "She will" and "Shut up" where Jehnny dedicates to all the boys of the audience I have to say for some reason made me feel a little intimidated, the two songs most of us were waiting to hear impatiently that night that come after are not easy to describe with words Leaving the best to everyone's imagination.

The talented Fay Milton on the drums and Ayse Hassan on the bass perfectly coordinated and influencing each other complete a mastery of a delicate music machinery, mostly isolated on the left side of the stage Gemma Thompson generously providing her dark side riffs and fuzzy melodies along with breathtaking Jehnny Beth stealing the show with her French elegant charismatic performance made me rub my hands with delight for everything evolving before my eyes.

"Strife", "Something new", "T.I.W.Y.G." "The Answer" and "Evil" engaged the crowd to the highest levels until they got to "Adore" a little to bring down the tones of the concert and "Marshal Dear" where Beth became one with the audience.

"Fuckers" the beloved song they chose to the show was the final blow in a live that lasted barely half an hour, but gave me unique, inspiring moments confirming absolutely everything I had in mind of the importance of this band.

All my expectations were fulfilled and I enjoyed it so much. This is one of the great bands of our time that for the past 4 years have been offering a great experience to the people that choose to visit their gigs and I am sure they will continue the good work keeping all excited for what more is to come from these four dynamic and talented ladies of the Post Punk scene.
